The state of modern programming...

from an e-mail today:

A Soc09 is a division problem. It usually means that one of the operands, in the division equation is zero.

Mash produces a report at the end of processing. One of the things reported is processing time, to the nearest second. The program uses division and rounds to the nearest second.

So, here's the rest of the story. Heather was running a very low volume file, ten records. Mash processed those records in less than 1 second. A division by zero occurred resulting in an abend.

What will we do to fix this? Nothing.

It should never happen in production, because, in a production environment, we send volume through Mash. If it ever happens in production, we may change the code.
